I have been building GARMIN-compatible maps from the OpenStreetMap maps, ready to be copied to your GARMIN units. These maps are generated frequently from OpenStreetMap data, so be sure to update often to get the latest versions.

I've been packaging, using the openSUSE's build service, some of the applications and utilities from the OpenStreetMap project. They are all available in the Application:Geo repository, where you can find packages for the most popular distributions.
The applications packaged so far are:

• JOSM
• mapper
• mkgmap
• osmosis
